This finished item is embarrassing! I have needed a house coat/dressing gown for a few years. The house coat that I currently own was purchased when I was working in my first full time job at a solicitors office when I was 18. It's really old and daggy and flannelette. I've have searched for a new house coat recently but have struggled to find something that isn't overly expensive, pink, fluffy or otherwise gross. Unfortunately, this 'replacement' isn't better than the horrible RTW options available.
Naturally, as I had enjoyed no success with purchasing a house coat, I thought I'd try making something with an interesting shape. I thought this polar fleece type fabric from stash would produce an adequate garment. Oh man! I've bombed!
This is a disaster. It's horrible to wear and definitely not cool or interesting. However, it is a house coat, because I certainly couldn't wear this outside of the house! And don't you think it's strangely similar to a Snuggie??
I think the fabric is polar fleece. It has a cable knitting design embossed onto it. I purchased it from the Spotlight discount table for only a few dollars a meter. When I showed it to a friend after purchasing, they doubted my choice and my plan to make it into a wearable garment with it. For the record, they were right and I was wrong!
The pattern itself is OK, if you are after a long line cocoon cardigan or if you feel like modifying it like Kirsty, but for this project it is not OK. To keep the cardigan closed and stay warm when working around the house I had to add a button to the front.
Oh well, sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. Surely a good garment is destined to come out of my sewing room soon.... though I did just finish another wadder last night.
Cost:
Pattern: Burda Cocoon Cardigan = $6.50
Fabric: 2m fleece type fabric from Spotty = $6.00
Thread from stash
Total: $12.50
It will be great for snuggling up to around the house. I think the fabric is kind of cute so I think it is a win for this and the price was right!
ReplyDeleteNo good that it is horrible to wear...but if it were comfortable it would make a fabulous house coat! And you can't argue with a spotty bargain. I love the idea of cocoon coats and the shape of this one is great. Maybe it is a bit biggish on you, although it looks amazingly snuggly! You could modify the next one to be a bit shorter like Kirsty's?
ReplyDeleteMy husband has a snuggie (if only I'd know before we got married right) and this is about 1000% better! Your coat looks super snuggly!
ReplyDeleteMight have to channel your style for my next version :)
ReplyDeleteOh dear. If only you'd have known......lol!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I've never worn my version of this pattern! I just feel like SUCH a bum in mine and I can't even bring myself to wear it around the house- I look better in my bathrobe! That said, yours at least looks nicer in black than my plaid. And I bet it's super cozy on a cold day!
ReplyDeleteLOL! But I have to say, when i say the title of the post and the pic, before reading, I thought it looked great and was a great idea!
ReplyDeleteIt is an interesting style to wear. I think that as we are both smaller people, it makes it even harder. I may still need to hunt for a new house coat as I'm not sure this is the best option.
ReplyDeleteYou are too kind!
ReplyDeleteI would have had the same plan too.
ReplyDeleteIt is so great that you can go "yeah this didn't work" it looks ok but if you aren't happy then that's what counts. I have a kimono style I use which seems to work ok?
