In my quest to reduce the number of RTW items that I purchase each year, I have made myself another cardigan, Simplicity 2250 in ponte.
I don't buy a lot of RTW, but still find myself snapping up those cheapie cardigans from shops like SES. If you live in Australia or Sydney, you probably know what I mean.
I've made this pattern before and it is a nice simple style which is easy to wear with most items. This time I've used a stretch remnant from Tessuti, which has little micro dots woven into it. I had less than a meter to irk this cardigan out of. The only reason I was able to successfully make this, was the paneled design and that I turned the side panels across the grain to fit them. This provides a very subtle contrast along the sides, which looks totally intentional. I used pre made bias binding from Nan's stash to finish the edges making this a very cost effective make and fast make.
I should note that I took these photos a few weeks ago, which is why it looks so sunny and warm. Winter is coming in Sydney and we have pulled our heater out now to take the chill out of the air.
Hope you have a great weekend!
Cost:
Pattern: Simplicity 2250, used before = free
Fabric:: 0.8m stretch remnant from Tessuti = $11.80
Bias binding: inherited from Nan's stash = free
Thread from stash
Total: $11.80
This cardi works really well. I have a few SES cardis in high rotation too.
ReplyDeleteYou know I was taking stock of my cardi's in my wardrobe the other day, ready for this cold weather and every single one is a cheap RTW. I may have to look this pattern up because I desperately need to make some of my own that aren't thin and flimsy. Great and simple make here, it looks like it will get worn a lot!
ReplyDeleteCute! I bet you'll wear this alllllllllllll the time!
ReplyDeleteCute cardi! You've got me stumped on SES. ..but I need to know now ;-). Can I have another clue!
ReplyDeleteHa ha - it's one of those trashy clothes stores with cheap imported clothes. Like Valley Girl, but way cheaper or Dotti, but maybe not that trashy. Don't worry, you aren't missing anything!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I made a Vogue cardi a little while ago which is also good Vogue 8819.
ReplyDeleteMine are starting to get holes in them now and I'm tossing up whether I should still go and get more.....
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
ReplyDeleteLovely cardi Christy. I think it's a great idea to make your own - much better than the ho-hum store bought ones....
ReplyDeletePerfect! There is nothing better than black and white spots.
ReplyDeleteNice cardie, much better than anything you could buy from SES - their clothes are so plastic you might spontaneously combust if you stood too close to your heater! Speaking of which, we got our heater out today so I'm sure we'll probably get some warmer weather now....
ReplyDeleteGreat cardi! Did you make any alterations, particularly to the width? I tried this one a little while ago but it stuck out at the back so i never finished it.
ReplyDeleteI really like the shape of this cardigan. It looks quite versatile.
