It's so easy

I saw this pattern online a few days ago and fell in love. Vogue 8552 has everything that I love in a dress, cap sleeves, pleated neckline, pockets!!!
So I stole a few very short moments on public holiday Monday and headed to my local Lincraft, bought this pattern, traced and cut my fabric all in about 1 hour! Since then I've stolen a few more moment and this is my new dress.
While a lot of people like the oversize pockets on this pattern, I opted for the side ones. I also found the dress quite large, a little too large for my frame, so I replicated the back waist tucks on the front of the dress too. By a great fluke, these tucks aligned with the outside pleats on the neckline, making them look like they are supposed to be there, which you can see in this photo.
The other modification I made to the pattern was omitting the back zipper. Being quite an expert at sewing pull over dresses and having quite a 'straight up and down' body AKA the surfboard, I knew that the zipper wouldn't be necessary for me. So I cut the back of the dress and the facing on the fold taking out the seam allowance.
Not the best photo of the back, but I'm sure you get the idea. Other than those changes I pretty much stuck to the pattern, cutting a regular 10.  As you can see from these photos, I'm planning on wearing this dress with a belt. I'm considering making one from the lovely grosgrain ribbon I've pictured. Cinching my waist, helps give me a waist.
This is the dress without the ribbon, totally wearable, but I think I'd have to use a  more exciting fabric to get away with it.

Now I trawl through Pattern Review before I purchase any pattern, but have never contributed a review. From now on I think I'm going to start adding to their reviews whenever I sew from a current commercial pattern. Hopefully I'll get on tonight to add it.

  1. Fantastic Dress! Love it! Perfect for me for summer. You're a very clever sewer. I am quite the novice, that neckline looks a bit difficult for me!

  4. Just for something different, I dare you to make the one with the front pockets. Would be fun in a bold summer print.

  8. Love that neckline. Interestingly Mum was recommending Vogue patterns to me today, saying they were the only ones that worked out the best.
Was complaining to her about the Make It Perfect pattern that only gives you instructions to draft up the pattern.... bit annoyed about that, thought I already paid for the pattern!!
