I based the shorts on the Oliver & S Sandbox pants pattern that I am babysitting for a friend. I normally gloss over the detail in patterns to sew many things quickly, but made sure I took my time to add all the detail suggested in the pattern, right down to the buttons and button holes on the back pockets.
The key change that I made to the pattern, which you may have noticed is that I didn't add the large side patch pockets onto the shorts. I thought that they would take too much away from the cool cars fabric, so instead I included internal pockets, which are pretty easy to fudge through, once you've sewn a pattern with them before. I made Oliver a size 4 and scaled the pattern down to about a 3 for James' ones.
Can you tell the boys are trying to watch the TV during these photos?
I really, really love the fit of this pattern as it's nice and trim. I also love the half elastic back with the drawstring front, which will definately come in handy with my boys, especially James who will probably be toilet trained soon, so will need plenty of adjustable, elastic clothes.
The fabrics I've used here for those who sew are Riley Blake Wheels fabric, Micheal Miller Ta Dot, Honeycomb Kei in orange and some Robert Kaufman print. I love the crazy mix of fabric and especially love James' shorts - they look so 70's with their brown, orange and teal fabric.
