Just a simple wardrobe staple, but it's just what I need and I have so many items to wear with it this winter.
Some of you who have met me in real life (like Maria), may remember me quite vocally opposing the exposed zipper - I've ranted often about my dislike for them. Buuuuuuttttt, I guess I've changed my mind!
I may have been swayed by this skirt from Anthropologie and yes, I will wear my skirt with my new Liberty wrap top just like the picture! I ran an antique brass two way zipper down the back and I love it! Not only does it allow me to get into this skirt, but if I intend to walk fast and need a little more movement, I can simply un zip for an instant vent.
I had a lot of trouble finding an antique brass two way zipper without paying a mint for shipping and ended up ordering one from Zipper Shipper in the US. I ordered two and they were still expensive, but I think it's worth it. The zipper was longer than I needed, so I shortened it using pliers and some other cutting tool that I nicked from my husband's tool box. I still haven't returned it, so I hope he doesn't miss it.
The skirt is mostly self drafted but I based the initial sizing and darts on Vogue 1247. I guessed the panel shaping, which you can barely see in these photos, added seam allowances and basted it together to play with the fit before serging and top stitching.
I just love this skirt and am so pleased that it has moved from idea to finished item so quickly.
Cost:
Pattern: Vogue 1247 modified heavily and used before = Free
Fabric: .8m denim from My Hung = $8
Zipper: 26 inch two way zipper from Zipper Shipper inc part shipping = $7.70
Thread from stash
Total: $15.70
Very nice. Love the zipper. Great wardrobe staple.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great, the zip is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteIf you are ever in need of an unusual zip, give YKK Australia a call, they are normally pretty good about helping you track one down. Greenfields would be another place to try too. Sorry I know it's not much help after the fact!
Love the fit on this!!
ReplyDeleteI made a denim pencil skirt and wore it for the first time the other day. I love it. I love it more than I realized I would!
Ooh, I love that the zipper is so functional! So awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great. Really like the zipper. I have just downloaded that wrap top. I couldn't resist any longer !
ReplyDeleteHa Ha - thanks! Will try calling the supplier next time. I did phone every fabric store I knew, but didn't call Greenfields after 8 or so 'no' answers. Cheers :)
ReplyDeleteThanks-great minds!
ReplyDeleteYou'll love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks - you should totally make one for summer!
ReplyDeleteSo good! This is such a functional and stylish piece. I would wear that outfit all the time!
ReplyDeleteLove it Christy! That zip is very cool. And I love the wrap top as well. Might have to invest in that one.
ReplyDeleteGreat skirt! I love the zip idea for the back, so stylish and functional - I love pencil skirts but the thought of walking in them does my head in. I might just steal that back vent idea ;-).
ReplyDeleteHey. Nice to see this exposed zipper on your new love.
ReplyDeleteSeriously. You've done a top job.
And I've never considered any of our conversations rants. They're simply excited exchanges wouldn't you agree :))
PS: I have a couple of pieces with exposed zippers in the wings XD
This is lovely! And looks like a perfect addition to everyday wardrobes, hmm... ;) Thanks for the zip tips as well, & Susan, Thanks ;)
ReplyDeleteI love the zipper! I know the feeling, I don't think I need anything either. Need however is very different to want!
ReplyDeleteYou are too kind, but I will take the 'excited exchanges' idea. I look forward to seeing your new pieces.
ReplyDeleteOh I remember the exposed zipper rant! I'm glad you changed your mind though because your skirt looks really great
