I think this project has shot up to the top of my 'to do' list.
This is the dress in its current state.
Noice huh? If it wasn't Liberty, I'm not sure I would have seen the potential.
This is the dress pinned.
Shoulder depth reduced, sides pinned, skirt shortened by about 30 cms to mid knee. What do you think about the sleeves? I think I'd get more wear out of this with short sleeves. They are quite volumous at the moment, so will need significant mods to reduce.
The dress is wool, so will be warm to wear. What do you think? Are the sleeves one modification too much? Or is it totally hot? I'm leaning to hot....
Sorry bout the dark photos - tyring to fit too much in today!
Thanks :)
I think the sleeves will be more useful longer, maybe changing the shape? Even 3/4 sleeves with no cuff?
ReplyDeleteLonger sleeve without the gathered cuff - a sleeker finish?
Liberty wool is easy to wear, and not too hot, but it will be a trans-seasonal dress, not really a short sleeve dress.
Hope that helps,
Lia
What a score! I was going to suggest 3/4 sleeves too since you'll probably wear this in winter.

I really like the original sleeves - I think with more shape through the bodice, the shoulder adjustment and a shorter skirt it would look really great. A total score - I remember my mum having this print in the 1970s. It is one of my favourite liberty prints
ReplyDeleteI think perhaps the 3/4 sleeve too. It seems a nice compromise, but keeps it stylish and maybe suits the weight of the fabric better.
ReplyDeleteI agree with most commenters, a 3/4 length (or gathered just above the elbow?) would suit the original styling of the dress most. With it being wool you're going to get most use of of it in the cooler months anyway.
ReplyDeleteWhat a find - that print is lovely. Yay for Holly Hobbie!
ReplyDeletePersonally I like the look of the short sleeve---but that's just the look, not so much thinking about practicality. 3/4 sleeves are great for winter dresses---but I'm also not sure that what you call winter is what I call winter ;). What a fun find, though! :)
ReplyDeleteOh I think it has great potential! I actually like the short sleeves.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's going to be lovely. I second Tanit-Isis, do you ever wear 3/4 or bracelet length sleeves - might suit the wool weight?
ReplyDeleteI like the short sleeves, or maybe above the elbow at the most. But that's a comment from a Brisbaner as you don't get much use out of long sleeves up here.
ReplyDeleteI like the short sleeves - you can always team it with one of those little cardigans that you bought last year.
ReplyDeleteThis is the most divine fabric! I like the shortening the sleeves idea, and the skirt length (and just think of what you could make from the fabric you chop off the skirt). A definite score!
